To quote Sarah Jessica Parker’s character on Sex & The City, “shopping is my cardio”. While I would love to pretend that lapping all four corners of Woodfield Mall is cardio enough to shed these love handles, I know better and thought it was time to step it up a notch, quit my bitchin’ and try out Title Boxing Club.
A couple of years ago I read an article about my Grandpa Spera that was published in the Chicago Tribune on September 4, 1953. In the article it tells of how my Grandfather, Marty, had a long and varied career in the world of brawn and muscle. Most memorable was the night he fought a four-round exhibition match with Rocky Graziano. The Rock, he modestly admits, was an unknown at the time, and the result—oh, yes, a draw.
Since reading this and learning more about my grandfathers life I said one day I will try boxing, whether it be fitness classes or actually getting in the ring, just as a sort of tribute to him. Today was that day.
I went with my friends Brian and Shaun to Title Boxing Club’s POWER HOUR Class. The first 15 minutes consisted of warm up’s; lunges, burpees, jogging, push ups, jumping jacks, squats, mountain climbers, you name it. As we get down for push ups I watch a sweat puddle form onto the floor and Brian looks over at me and says “it’s been four minutes”. Four minutes and I was wrecked. After 11 more minutes of high intensity warm ups we move on to the boxing. The boxing was more enjoyable, but you had to keep moving the entire time and being that it was my first time, I struggled a bit to learn the combinations at such a fast pace.
Even though it was very high intensity for the full hour, you were able to take a breather and go get a drink if you needed to and the instructor was surprisingly encouraging. After the class I chatted with the boys while playing with the dumbbells and weights and I felt like a million bucks. I looked like utter shit and was drenched in sweat, but I was proud of myself for going as hard as I could.
I’m super pumped to continue these class and get in killer shape for the summer. If you are interested in trying this class, they offer a class free to try so you have nothing to lose, just be prepared for an ass kicking! 🙂
