What a great morning I had! I woke up early and got ready for my first day as a member of Operation Support Our Troops-America. I went to their warehouse and was blown away as I opened the door. There were boxes and boxes stacked up and labeled, items that were dropped off and needing sorting, everything was set up in such an organized manner as to be able to find what you need. In the next room you see a room of volunteers and members in assembly lines at different tables/stations with smiles on their faces chatting away and getting to know each other. I was shown what each station was and was absolutely amazed that because of the generous donations, we are able to send all of these items to the troops overseas. At the hygiene station it wasn’t just a toothbrush and some bars of soap- it was dental floss, toothbrushes, mouthwash, deodorant, razors, you name it! They had stations for canned goods and for candy, books, magazines, toys and my favorite of all -the handwritten letters station where you prepare these letters to be included in the boxes. When I saw the box that they sent out I was even more amazed- they pack the box full to the brim of everything a service member overseas could ever want and need.
After my orientation I offered to stay and help package up some candy to prepare for Christmas stockings (we need to prepare as early as possible for Stockings for Our Troops). I filled bags of candy and talked with the wonderful people at my station. The one man had a daughter who went to the same college as me and I heard her entire life story, the other was a grandmother of a now retired sailor who went on to become a film maker, the other had 4 brothers serving in the Navy- each and every person I met had a story to tell and I left there with such a happy feeling inside.
The kind of work that this organization does and the dedicated members and volunteers that devote their time to helping is incredible and I am beyond joyful that I get to be apart of it.
