DIY Map Heels

July 14, 2015

We all have that pair of heels in our closet, you know the ones- they are beaten up so badly but so darn comfortable that you cant bare to throw them out.  They sit in the back of your closet housing dust bunnies until you have that job interview or wedding to go to.  Not to fear, The Global Chameleon is here to help you repurpose those Cinderella heels and make them new again.

The great part about this project is that you have the ability to create a unique pair of heels inspired by your own interests.  I have an obsession with all things travel, so it made sense for me to choose a map for the theme of my heels.  The only thing you need to purchase is the Mod Podge and you’ve got yourself a customized pair of kicks!  Let me walk you through it.

What you’ll need:image

  • Mod Podge
  • Brush
  • Map
  • Scissors
  • Old Heels

Start out by cutting your map into small, jagged pieces.  There is no specific technique here, each piece will be a unique part of your project.

I used an Illinois state map-as I had it on hand-and cut out cities of significance to me and applied those last.image

Using your brush, stick your pieces on, then apply a layer of mod podge over the pieces.  Start along the edge of the shoe and then fill in the gaps with bigger feature pieces.  Steady hands and a lot of patience are key here.  Use thinner strips on the curves to avoid bumpage.

Once complete, layer the entire shoe with a coat of mod podge (I used matte but glossy would look awesome too).  Let dry, layer a final coat and leave to dry overnight.

While time consuming, they are the ultimate conversation starter and one of a kind!

What do you think?  Are you going to use a map for your project?  Try out newspaper, pages from your favorite book, make a heel scrapbook or use your favorite recipes.  The possibilities are endless!
